Map Layers group together map data items by their value in a designated field. The field is specified in the Map Data page, however the settings for each layer are specified here.

A layer defines a number of features for its members (depending on the map type):

• Popup - text displayed for the item as a popup on the map
• Icon - for points, the icon used to show the location
• Colour - for shapes and colour settable icons

Layers serve several purposes and so there are several options defining its use:

• Hide Legend - check to not show the list of layers top left in the map
• Legend Title - heading for the list of legends (if shown)
• Text Only - check to show just the layers' text in the legend (otherwise the icon will also be shown)
• Filter Layers - check to make the layers legend a filter option - checkboxes will be added

The Layers page shows a list of all layers. Drag and drop to set the sequence in which they are displayed in the legend list.

Click a layer to edit its details, or click “New Layer” to add a layer. You can copy the new layer from an existing one, retaining all of its settings.

Each layer is defined by its value in the layer field. Note the special layer whose value is *. This acts as the fallback default for any layer value not added to the list of defined layers

Depending on the map type, the following settings are available.

• Popup - use the HTML Editor to create a formatted popup for the layer's items
• Icon - choose from the list of available icons - some are colour settable
• Colour - for shapes and colour settable icons - for the default * layer colours are allocated automatically from the list of map colours in your account's theme.
